Very few people want to see local shops, markets, and independent shops disappear thanks to the big supermarkets, or to see their town centres transformed into replicas of each other. However, over the last 10-20 years this process has been accelerating. The High Street has become less interesting and more like every other chain shopping centre. Commercial rates keep on rising so that only the large traders can survive. We are at risk of losing the interesting retail outlets, the sole of our country. Local planners appear to be in the hands of big companies such as Tesco’s. They are to blame for a lot of the small trader issues with their over zealous parking regulations, double yellow lines, lack of pay and display bays, closing the high street car parks and selling off car parks to be developed into offices and retail units. One of numerous council’s favourite slogans is ‘working in partnership with small business’. This does not appear to be happening.

Most small traders promote themselves in a low key way. However, aggressive supermarkets have professionals who are paid lots of money to handle promotions. They have big budgets and lots of staff and most small traders do not. Supermarket chains have been ruthless. They find the biggest and best sites and build large stores on them offering products at prices lower than those in the small shops. They use their muscle to obtain cheap rates charged by suppliers.

It used to be possible for small traders to make a good living by offering a quick service for small items, however this is now not the case due to stores such as Tesco Express. The figures are scary. More than a third of the money we spend on food is spent at Tesco. One pound in every seven we spend on shopping is spent at Tesco. For every 1 spent, more than 70p is removed from the local community and less than 30p stays in the area with rates and wages. With local shops this is reversed.

Well is there a remedy for this? Give councils, in co-operation with local business groups, more planning and regulatory powers, tax breaks for shops that sell local produce? Yes this would be a start, however small traders are already hitting back.

Loyalty cards and festivals have been set up in towns as a means of encouraging customers to “shop local”, as smaller businesses compete against supermarkets. Small traders have been identifying unique selling points and pushing locals to “think local”. Small family-owned concerns are starting to show that they add individuality and character to any shopping parade and are showing they can open near existing supermarkets and offer products of often superior quality at competitive prices. The trick here is not to sell your superior products, as some do, three times dearer than the same product in the supermarket. There are limits to what most people are prepared to pay.

Then there is the important issue of personal service. If I go into my local shopping parade I can expect a pleasant chat from the haberdasher, wool owner, butcher, fishmonger and deli owner. Down at the supermarket you are likely to get a perfunctory nod from the check out operator or merely a disembodied voice at the self-service tills. There is often time in the day to prepare food, but standing over a hot stove, stirring soup is not a productive use of your time.

This is where the slow cooker comes into its own.

You simply prepare the ingredients, put them into the crock pot and walk away. You can get on with other things, leaving the slow cooker to do its job.

Fish cooks quickly so you don’t need as long as meat dishes.

You can use any mixture of fish you like in this recipe - smoked or plain - oily fish is not suitable though, so don’t use salmon, mackerel or similar.

You need to soften the potatoes and onion - if you were cooking a meat dish, then it would take longer, but with a seafood soup, the cooking time is shorter, so the vegetables need to be cooked a little.

This quantity will serve four people. Most crock pots will be big enough for this amount of liquid.

You would think this is really basic stuff handled well by many. However, when I work with other consultants, I find it is often overlooked! How often do consultants forget to truly understand what the REASONS are that clients would want and need consultants? Well, in my experience, it happens too often and more than it should.

Your challenge as a consultant is to find their reasons for utilizing consulting services, NOT your reasons for wanting them to choose you!

As a consultant, you must not confuse “problems” with “reasons.” Problem statements and issues will normally be abundant and detailed, but, the “reasons” to solve those problem is of great value to the Odyssey Consultant.

Once you have a clear understanding of the reasons, you will be better positioned to help the client and to understand the “value” of solving the problems, which will help you to better develop the value proposition to your client later.

Focus your questioning on finding out what their reasons are for discussing a project, problem, issue or concern.

Get them to verbalize the reasons, by asking more “why is that important?” type of questions.

In this process make sure you show your client that you care about them, so that they feel comfortable enough to share openly with you about the real or underlying problems, issues and fears they may be dealing with.
