Consumer line, Northern Ireland’s consumer helpline, has received a number of complaints of fake GHD hair straighteners recently from members of the public who have bought fake ghds both directly from websites, mainly based in the Far East, and on internet auction sites.

Stephen Thompson, Consumer line Manager said: “Fake GHD hair straighteners are not only poorly made and short-lasting, but they are also very dangerous. Users are running the risk of damaging their hair or even being injured from electric shocks or burns.

“In order to minimize the risk of purchasing fake ghds, consumers should always ensure they buy from a reputable trader. A website may have a .co.uk address, however this does not mean that the trader is based in the UK.

“Consumers should also always check for a postal address on a website. If there no postal address, then the trader’s location is unknown. They may even be as far away as China, making it extremely difficult to seek any form of redress, if the goods purchased are in fact counterfeit.”
